Life feeds off of the death of other life. If you haven't, watch Okuribito. Ultimately, things die, and yet they give birth to other things. Sentimentality towards certain animals because we like their appearance or demeanor is arbitrary. I would eat a dog, but I'd have trouble with eating a cat simply because I've always had cats as pets. As Gavin said, Aussies and Americans have come to see dolphins and whales as pets, which is completely out of line with reality, especially when it comes to whales.
